Waiting for a turn
Regarding traffic lights. To the person who Sounded Off about turn signals needing to be added to some intersections, you are right on the button! You can add 18th Street and Brandon Avenue to that list too!
Just happy to be here
Got my mortgage tax component adjustment today to include the $348.20 increase in property taxes. Considering I live in one of the best cities in Canada, with a progressive local government, low crime rate, above average services and a quality educational system, I’m OK with paying my share to keep Brandon moving forward — FYI, I never had any children in the educational system, I’m just happy to contribute to Canada’s future.
Storm wreaks havoc but brings out the best in people
I happened to be one of the unfortunate homeowners on 11th Street whose spruce tree uprooted during the storm on July 5. It crashed on my house and my neighbour’s as well. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Jim for arranging equipment for its removal. Thanks to Murray, Mark and Claude for your expertise. Sacrificing their Sunday, family, friends, neighbours and strangers pulled together. They worked diligently with chainsaws for several hours in the heat, cutting and making several trips to the dump. This storm wreaked havoc in the city, but also proved to me that everyone bands together when there is a crisis. I am ever so grateful! Kudos to all of you!
Just get ’er done!
I know that the construction on Victoria Avenue is important and they say in the paper that they will try to keep access to business maintained. You cannot please everyone and I for one think trying to keep any street open is a big, big mistake. Any job in construction that is piecemeal is doomed to failure. Close off the sections needed and get it done. Enough of this pussyfooting around. Put up the barricades and get at it.
Mr. Prime Minister, we need aid right here in Manitoba
Prime Minister Harper always leaves millions of dollars behind when he visits other countries and gives foreign aid millions of dollars. I hope he did the same when he visited Manitoba and left millions behind to help all the flood victims. I think Manitoba flood victim aid is more important than foreign aid.
Letter writer gets it right
I was reading the July 10 Brandon Sun and read the letter to the editor from Virgina Shemeliuk of Sandy Lake, “Health Regions, Heal Thyselves.” It is one of the best letters I have read in a long, long time. She hits the nail right on the head.
You need to get more informed
I kind of got aggravated when I read the sexual orientation Sound Off in the paper recently. As an advocate for human rights issues, I believe that it is not the point of the gay pride event to flaunt sexual orientation but to celebrate the diversity and the fact of the history of the Pride event at Stonewall. I honestly think that this person is just misinformed or very uneducated. My advise to this person would be to hit Google alert!
If you want respect — show respect
I couldn’t agree more with the writer of the letter to the editor a few weeks ago regarding the conduct of the Pride parade in Toronto. “Is there any wonder that they and their allies are looked at as a bunch of perverts.” What a disrespectful performance, especially when children are present or at any time. Just what kind of message is this sending to our children and young people? They are listening — but what are they hearing? The problem most people have with homosexuality, etc., is not about orientation or same sex attraction but about acts and behaviour. If you want respect show respect! Would the police and authorities have allowed such a performance in the general populations?
Making a decision for us all
Regarding the buffer zones. I think it is highly unfair that one individual gets to make a decision for a whole neighbourhood. It is not even a matter of them having to have a logical excuse why they don’t want their homes sprayed. I would like to see it go back to where you have to have a medical condition or at least something more concrete than just “I don’t like malathion.” It does affect the neighbours too!
