Sound Off -- July 20, 2012

Everyone graduates

It’s too bad the BSD graduation rate of 96.4 per cent doesn’t reflect an elevated level of student intelligence instead of merely exposing the mediocrity of the education system. Continually “dumbing down” the curriculum to justify rising school taxes with higher graduation percentages should not be tolerated by the students or the taxpayers.

Leafy Spurge out of control

Are our weed inspectors, agricultural personnel and municipal people taking a look at the ditches in our south west area? Leafy Spurge is an invasive weed and we need to be proactive if we do not want it to take over. There are several patches along No. 10 highway south of Brandon.

A little too uptight

In response to “Improper restaurant behaviour.” I feel sorry for the man who thought my granddaughter was out of control at the restaurant — no crying, no wailing, just being a normal, happy, fun-loving two-year-old. It is sad that this man is so uptight that he could not enjoy his meal. Perhaps he could take a look at himself or maybe he would enjoy life better if he just stayed at home.

Just say ‘no comment’

Has anyone noticed how Mayor Shari keeps sticking her foot in her mouth? With her latest gaffe, she’s blamed an accounting software company for the city’s inability to file its financial records on time. When the software company takes offence to her claim, the city has to have its communication officer step in to bail the mayor out of her PR mess. Perhaps someone should brief the mayor on what she is permitted to say and when she should stick with “no comment.”

O Canada: Do you sing along or just listen?

When local “celebrities” are asked to open a public event by leading the singing of “O Canada,” what do they do? Usually they choose their own key, add an extra note here and there and end on a high note that the average singer cannot reach with any sense of dignity. And what do you do? Just stand and listen? When people are asked to sing our national anthem, they should be reminded that this is not a “command performance” to showcase their vocal artistry, but a community singalong. Their role is to lead the singing of a simple, standard version in a way that the average person can join in.

Graduation rates misleading

I see the Brandon School Division is touting its graduation rates for this year. As is the case with all statistics, they can be used to tell part of the story. Ask any high school teacher how watered down the courses are, how you cannot give out a zero for missed assignments and how much pressure the teachers get from senior administration to “get them through” and you will hear the other side of these “amazing” graduation rates. It is becoming nearly impossible for students to fail a course and the end result of that is an artificially inflated graduation rate and a diploma that is worthless.
