Sound Off -- July 3, 2012

Please give us a choice

If bicycle riders were given the choice of riding on the shoulder of the road facing traffic, as pedestrians are allowed to walk, there would be fewer bicycles on the sidewalks. By riding facing the traffic, riders would be able to see the oncoming motor vehicles and take evasive action if necessary before they are hit by drivers not paying attention. Deaths on the highway that have been the result of cyclists hit from behind would not have occurred if this simple change to the rules had been enacted. The act governing the rules for cycling is presently under review and a choice between the left or the right shoulder should be granted in the new legislation. The results of this choice if given, could be visually monitored then used in one or two years to make a final mandatory rule for bicycles.

Should have kept searching

The decision to suspend the search for survivors in the Elliot Lake mall disaster without ascertaining the source of the tapping sound was institutionalized cowardice of the most vile nature.

Spoiled back yard people

I do not understand why the people with back lane garbage pickup are so upset with the new rules for garbage pickup. The people with back lane pickup have been spoiled for many years. The people with no back lanes have had to take their garbage bins to the street the morning of pickup and return them to the yard after. The no-back-lane people have had to store their bins either in their back yards, garages or in their front yards and they have managed with the “ugly” bins in their yards.

HAIR-RAISING Tax

I don't think it’s fair that the government has targeted anyone, well mostly women, getting a haircut or a facial. It’s not only hard on female customers, it’s also hard on business owners who have to figure out this ridiculous tax.
