Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION

Sound Off -- July 4, 2012

Congratulations on a wonderful fireworks display

The fireworks display this weekend was the best we’ve ever seen in Brandon. Whatever company put them on, you did a terrific job. We sure hope to see you back next time.

Bylaw is garbage

Have city hall officials actually studied anyone’s case other than in the rich suburbs where they all live? Many, many, many residents in older parts of the city just can’t easily move those bins back and forth each week. The yards and fences and lanes weren’t designed for that. Why can’t we just leave the bins in the lanes and maybe turn them sideways if we don’t need pickup? Or is that too hard for the drivers/city officials to understand? And if the bins are across the lanes, bet that grass was never cut much anyhow even years ago. And the land belongs to the city, not the neighbour across the lane.

Back lane garbage is twice the work

I think that some people are missing the point when it comes to back lane garbage pickup. When this system was first implemented in the areas without back lanes, people had to take their bins to the end of their driveway for pickup. Why do people have a driveway? For a car! Driveways are always cleared of snow so therefore it was easier for the bins to be pushed to the end. How would you like to have to shovel 50 feet or more to make a path to your back lane? Then to put all the bins on one side, it is not fair that the bins could sit out behind a neighbour’s fence forever! Would this not bother you, cannot even cut your grass outside your own property?

Thanks for the light show

Congratulations to the Town of Minnedosa and their fire department for the wonderful fireworks display over beautiful Minnedosa Lake on July 1. What a great community effort!

One more loss for live music

Not only has Brandon lost one of its most appreciated outdoor licensed patios with the temporary closure of Clancy’s Eatery and Drinkery on Princess Avenue, but it was also a dependable venue for live music. Local bands had a nice place to play there on a regular basis. And it was also easy to park around and get in and out of. surely, some enterprising business person with some experience running a nightclub and restaurant will see the value in the location and have it reopened while the sun still shines.

Closure is thoughtless

The Habitat Restore filled three needs in our community: 1) Keeping things out of landfill; 2) Helping lower income people to buy things; and 3) Raising money to help build houses for lower-income families. To close the store is both stupid and thoughtless.

Habitat bad-at-that!

How could a charity like Habitat for Humanity get away with such a shoddy operation for so long? Doesn’t anybody in government check things out behind the scenes before writing cheques and smiling for the camera? What happens to all those people now who have worked hard to get into Massey Manor? Are they still going to get their homes? Really hope the city puts that project under the microscope instead of simply voting more money for it time and time again.
