Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION

Sound Off -- July 7, 2014

What about the people we are already paying?

Regarding the water problem on Mr. Hoy’s property. The Brandon Sun reported June 30 the city will hire an engineering consultant to assist in solving this problem. This, after we recently learned of the six-figure salary some members of the city engineering department earn. Something is very wrong here!

Grow up and clean up!

What is wrong with the people at Massey Manor who do not know how to use a dumpster? Don’t leave your trash on the landing, in a puddle or beside the dumpster. Seeing dirty diapers strewn by the park is disgusting! CMHA should not have to clean your filthy mess. Also, this not a drop site for your garbage furniture. Grow up!

Oh Canada, the true North, strong and free?

But are we? Lately I’ve been unimpressed and disappointed with the governing bodies of our country. Why are the child rapists and pornographers only serving two years in jail? Why are the RCMP so underfunded that they don’t even have updated equipment to properly defend and protect themselves and yet they are called on to protect our communities? Why is prostitution becoming legal when prostitution takes advantage of women, teenagers and even children who are lost and alone? Why are the soldiers, men and women who defend our country, having their budget cut to the point where they have to pay for their own mortgage breaking — not their fault, they are forced to move? Is Canada still the home of the strong and free? Or have we become so politically correct that the bad guys have more rights and freedoms than the victims? What’s wrong here and what is our government doing to correct these outrageous situations?

The lament of a law-abiding driver

Comments appear quite regularly in Sound Off suggesting that people who do not keep up with the traffic should get off the road. Four things wrong with this thinking. Firstly, drivers in Brandon consistently drive at speeds in excess of the speed limit. Which means that I, as one who obeys the law, is asked to break the law to satisfy the speeders. Secondly, the absurd logic of this thinking suggests that I should accommodate those that break the law. Does this mean, for example, that I should keep my car or house unlocked with the keys in the door locks so I can accommodate those that want into break into my car or house? Thirdly, it is I, and others who obey the driving laws, who are in constant jeopardy resulting from persons who ignore the rules of the road. Fourthly, to keep up with those who ignore the rules of the road means that I must forgo my obligation to obey rules in favour of following the “rules” of the crowd. And we know what happens when a crowd ignores the laws of the land.

Just say ‘no’

I had an employee come to me for a raise last week and I said no. If you do not have extra money you cannot give out extra money. Now, she may leave and go somewhere else, but I will just replace her. Not wasting my time and money with arbitration, strikes, threat of a walkout. Just see ya later. The City of Brandon does not have money to fork out to the big three unions: police, firefighters, teachers. If that is the case, break the unions before they bankrupt the public. Just say “no” and don’t let the door hit you on the backside on your way out!
