Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION

Sound Off -- June 14, 2014

When will it end?

This is regarding the boil water advisory. In Rivers, we are still boiling water and it has been that way for many weeks. It is June now and I was wondering if anyone can tell me how long we are still going to be boiling water and buying drinking water and still paying high water bills.

FAIL

We live in a tyranny of political correctness. If there was a college or university of common sense many of these idealists would fail.

There is only so much pension to go around

Where do we go? How many of us seniors are going to have to sell our houses and move out of Brandon? My taxes are up almost $300 since last year. We are told that the seniors are being helped to stay in their own homes. When I bought 35 years ago, there was a nice paved back lane and now it is a disaster with big holes full of water. Even the front street needs repair. If you have a small lap dog — part of the family — you cannot rent an apartment. So how many choices do you have? Some of us will have to cut back on medications or food as every utility wants an increase. Brandon taxes are ridiculous.

Shut it down

We like to enjoy our coffee outside rather than going inside a coffee shop, but you know these people who leave their cars running or their lights on — that is annoying for us who like to sit outside. They should be fined for that. Please turn your lights and your vehicle off so we can enjoy our coffee, too.

Vandalism of homestead disgusting

Having visited the Criddle-Vane Homestead many times, I read with sadness and disgust about the ongoing vandalism issues out there. The last incident showing the walls bashed in was hard to take. I don’t know how this family accomplished as much as they did — from scientific labs to golf courses out in the middle of the prairie. Obviously they were a talented and resourceful people. Very sad how a few boneheads can spoil it for everyone else.

No one should have to see that

The cover picture of the June 7 Brandon Sun Weekend supplement is probably the most disgusting picture you have ever printed. What a poor example for young people who are at the age when they “copy” what they see. This type of stunt should never be given any publicity. Also, many of the photo spreads used in the Weekend are often so meaningless, and the pictures of “people on the street” could be classed as an invasion of privacy. They are a waste of space. You could do so much better!

Go see for yourself

For the person who wrote in the May 27 Sound Off wanting names — go and sit in criminal court on Tuesdays or Thursdays starting at 10 a.m. There you will not only get names but will be able to see who are causing problems. If you drive around the core area, you already have the answer. I also thank the police for what they do and having more in this city — I’m all for it — especially police on bikes!

Feeling trapped

I can’t enjoy my backyard because the city won’t spray for mosquitoes. I can’t enjoy my front yard because the city doesn’t spray for dandelions and all the seeds blow onto my front yard making a mess of it. I can’t enjoy going for a walk because I see graffiti all over the place because the city seems more concerned about people leaving their bins in the back lanes instead of having the police patrol for vandals. Time to get our priorities right.

Where are the mosquito traps placed?

I would like the mayor and council to come out for a walk around the city golf course and the Deer Ridge. You certainly wouldn’t last long I can assure you that. Put your mosquito traps there and the count will not take long to hit the maximum.

We survived winter for this?

A pleasant walk is totally ruined by sand flies in your face and mosquitoes biting. The branches on the city trees are black with tent caterpillars eating all the leaves while many, many of the bushes are covered with disgusting looking black growths. Might as well be winter!
