Sound Off -- June 18, 2012

Public safety should be council’s top priority

I think the mayor and city council should devote more time at meetings discussing public safety and crime prevention and less time worrying about if someone leaves a garbage bin in the back lane. There are houses being burned down, people being beat up in city parks and at the summer fair and break-ins all over the city. Council seems more interested in policing the back lanes instead of putting policeman on the streets to ensure public safety.

Let mayor and council do their job

I watch with interest the Sound Off section from the Brandon Sun. I am from rural Manitoba and I cannot believe how negative your city is. Instead of being thankful for a mayor who had the foresight to prevent millions of dollars of damage from the flood, she saved millions. Everyone, whom I’m sure are previous mayor supporters, are so quick to find fault. As far as the casino, there never should have been a vote in the first place. That is what you elect your city council for. Let this mayor and council take the city ahead instead of backward. They are working to move the city ahead with foreward thinking. Let them do their job and appreciate what they are doing for your city.

Strike up the band

Congratulations to the Crocus Plains/Neelin marching band for their excellent performance in the Travellers Day parade. Your hard work, music, discipline and energy were much appreciated by my family. Well done!

Losing their religion?

A recent Sound Off provided my laugh of the day — a Christian thumping the Bible, but only half of it. The writer stated that the Old Testament with its creation myth, Ten Commandments and the promise of eternal life is to be disregarded. Apparently, only the New Testament is relevant and accurate. As an atheist, I found this revelation (excuse the pun) very enlightening and amusing. Is cherry-picking the Bible the only way Christians can make their religion palatable.

It’s important to be a good parent

It blows my mind that the single most important job that any of us will ever hold is that of being a parent. Any moron can father and/or give birth to children and then let them run wild like dogs and then let society raise them and be responsible for them. Politicians, let us start placing some responsibility and some ownership on these delinquent parents. Pope John Paul II stated, “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.” Delinquent parents, start parenting your children and social services, please start putting more pressure on these parents to do just that! These delinquent children are greatly affecting the rest of our society and it is not for the better. My goodness, already!

Mind your garbage

I have problems with other people’s garbage bins that sit in the back lane all year round behind MY FENCE! They are often over-loaded, which allows the lids to blow open and smack my fence and often garbage is left beside the bins for either myself or the city (when I call them) to pick up. These are not senior citizens but I am and I need this bylaw as I am replacing my fence and cannot afford to have it wrecked! Please city council, vote this through — the sooner the better.

Stop forcing religion on us

This is in regards to the Sound Off titled “Old is Bad, New is Good.” Sunday shopping should be up to each business. I respect people’s faith but not everyone believes in a higher power. Following your religion will not create a peaceful world when in fact it is these holy books that are destroying it. Just because you believe doesn’t mean we all have to. Stop forcing religion down society’s throat!

Bad biker

I read with interest just now the comments about the irresponsible biker. Could this be the same green motorcycle whose driver was wearing a green helmet the day before? If so, this is an accident or tragedy waiting to happen. On Monday, June 4, I was southbound on First Street. At a red light at First Street and Veteran’s Way, he was beside me and swinging his feet around. I’ve never seen this kind of behaviour before, but whatever. The light turned green and he sped off and proceeded to show off with his version of what I call idiot trick riding. He pulled both legs up onto the handlebars, at more than 70 km/h. I couldn’t believe me eyes! He pulled his legs back down but then proceeded to veer from side-to-side, with traffic in the next lane!

Population explosion

Maple Leaf is looking for housing units for their new employees that they recruited from Honduras and El Salvador. Brandon currently does not have enough housing for its current residents. And now Maple Leaf is going to bring in hundreds more people plus their families into Brandon. Where are we going to place all of these people? What about all the current Brandonites who need a place to live? Where are we going to live if all of these new people come into town?
