Sound Off -- June 20, 2012

Better to be safe than sorry!

Regarding the recent letter in Sound Off by the atheist on June 18. The evidence for the existence of the intelligent designer God is found in the intelligent design in all living and non-living matter. Mindless macro-evolution has no ability to produce intelligent design. The Bible, too, is totally from God in its original copy. God used about 40 different writers, over a space of about 3,000 to 4,000 years. He fully expects every human being to accept that He created all things, and that He gave us the Bible. He says He has given us proof that He exists through the things that are made, so that we are without excuse not to believe in Him. Those who believe that Christ is Saviour and Lord have forgiveness of sins and the free gift of eternal life. It makes perfect sense to me that these things are true. But even if there is no God, it is far better to be safe than sorry for eternity.

Hard not to share the love

To the person who asked not to have religion shoved at them. I agree some people try to force their beliefs on other people and this does not work. I have lived both ways of life — one without God involved and one with Him. I find it impossible not to share with other people the serenity and peace I have found. The newfound ambition to help other people is incredible. I have absolute belief that this is from a higher power whom I choose to call God. I wish I could instil it in everyone.

Dumpsters are dumpy to look at

The city council seems to be focused on keeping the back lanes looking nice. Wonder how they feel about those that have to look at the dumpsters sitting in one’s backyard. Really nice view! If the city is so concerned about how the back lanes look, maybe they should take a look at how they care for them. Ever hear of a grader?

I have better things to do

Does city hall really think we’re all a bunch of lay-abouts with so much time on our hands that we have nothing better to do than wheel those darn ungainly carts back and forth each week? Why can’t they stay in the lanes? I’ve heard many ways that there could be signals to the drivers if they aren’t full, such as a small red flag as is used expertly on rural mailboxes.

Thanks for the block

I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the owner of that small truck parked on Princess Avenue by the skateboard park. If your truck had not been parked there, the person on that bike that flew over the sidewalk would have been hit by my moving car, instead of being held back by hitting your vehicle.

Lack of housing driving students away

Great topic brought up in “Population Explosion” in June 18 Sound Off. Not only does the population explosion cause hardships on the citizens of Brandon, but I see first-hand other issues. Many students attending university and college cannot find proper housing. This affects course enrolment and programming as the students go to other locations. I guess securing a casino will solve these problems as that seems the focus of our leaders. Educating and retaining our youth should be foremost. Brandon is facing many more important issues than gambling, support your university and college.

Supply them with housing and a paycheque

I am reading about the population explosion and Maple Leaf bringing in more people looking for housing. Why don’t they do like a company in Alberta does — they have a plant similar to Maple Leaf and they have trailers for all their workers who they bring in. Maybe it would be a novel idea for Maple Leaf to try something like that here, then maybe we would have some apartments for other people to live in.

Cutting corners on child safety

Regarding the new mandatory booster seat law for kids under 80 pounds. I agree that everything possible needs to be done to protect our children from injury when travelling in a motor vehicle. I do, however, find all of this a bit of an oxymoron when we are required at least 180 days out of the year to put our kids on public school buses, which require no restraints or seatbelts at all, and then the remainder when travelling in our private vehicles they must be in car seats, seatbelts and now booster seats! When it comes to protecting kids, I don’t think the government should be allowed to cut corners on our child’s safety.
