Decent, reliable staff require decent wages

Restaurants in Brandon are starting to cut hours and closing because they can’t hire any decent, reliable staff. Some aren’t opening until 11:30 a.m. which means, no breakfast. That could be because decent, reliable staff aren’t going to work unless they get “decent, reliable wages.” Ten dollars an hour isn’t very much. Could the restaurant owners live on $400 less deductions, or about $260 a week? Decent reliable staff can squeak by on $11 or $12 an hour and just make ends meet.

Police service no longer a career choice

My son, who graduates this year, was going to go into police service which was something I always looked at all these years. But with all the past turmoil with the RCMP and the Winnipeg city police and all the criminal misdoings that they are involved in, he has now changed his mind. It is a sad tale when you see a young person looking ahead and seeing those people he held in such value all those years, fall down. I am disgusted actually and very, very disappointed from what I have seen myself. Here is a young man who will probably go on to do something else and obviously with his grades try and make a difference in this community, but I don’t know how we are ever going to straight this mess out. Good luck folks!

Cross at the crossings

Those train crossings are getting worse and worse? When is somebody going to fix them? It’s crazy.

Sad-sack cyclists

About these cyclists and how some can be so idiotic and stupid. I’m walking down the street on the sidewalk and I tell these two “Hey, you got the street, that’s what the road is for use it.” And they said, “The road’s too narrow.” Geez.

What’s with all the truck accidents?

More big truck snafus, the latest at the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 10 junction, with a three-truck pileup. Something is fundamentally wrong when there are so many local accidents involving big trucks and their drivers.

Taxes and cutbacks

Our government should be cutting back the MPs and senators as a way of saving money for our country other than trying to cut back wages and pensions for people. There never seems to be an end to the MPs and senators that Stephen Harper has put in Ottawa who do nothing for our country. Now deleting the penny will only cost Canadians who use real money to pay for things more as well as delay OAS for future people. I hope when MPs and senators get their pensions at 65, that they take a look at the others who are forced to work to 67. I am 45 but I may have to work to 90. I may not have enough money to go to the personal care home by that time. Shame on Ottawa and shame for Stephen Harper and the finance minister!

Why is the federal government taxing Canadians to death?

As a “middle income” taxpayer, I feel that there are no tax breaks for us. If we make improvements to our property, we are taxed on that. Now, if we make a charitable contribution, we can only claim 15 per cent as a tax deduction, at one time it was 100 per cent. In the long run, it will not be me that suffers if I don’t make any charitable contributions, but the charities. If you are a company, your contribution is 100 per cent deductible. I work two jobs, and pay my fair share of taxes. Where does all the money go? Are all people taxed the same?
