Sound Off -- June 29, 2012

Kudos to teachers and counsellors

I was reading the paper and saw the Neelin High School article and saw they had honoured Tara Leach. I find this so amazing that students can have that kind of trust and respect for their teachers. My daughter would not have graduated if her student counsellor and math teacher had not kept an eye on her! So thanks to those teachers out there that give their students the extra encouragement and respect to help achieve their goal of completing high school! Congrats to all the grads and have a great summer!

Time to learn about the birds and the bees … and dogs!

The female dog owner who doesn’t believe in spaying their dog, got what they deserved when their dog had two unwanted litters. Why was your dog unsupervised when she was “in season?” It’s normal behaviour for females to attract male visitors. I think you should be better informed about your unspayed female.

Why I prefer winter

In the summer months, dog owners leave their dogs outside constantly to bark at anything that moves! The worst offenders are the owners of small dogs. Do you think that just because the dogs are small that their bark or yipping is not annoying to people?

Obsessed with silencing debate and stifling dissent?

Democracy … only a nine-letter word, but the principles of this governance is so very powerful. Canadians and their allies fought in two world wars and the Korean War to uphold the foundations of democracy for countries under the fist of tyranny and dictatorship. Now that same virus has spread, infiltrated and contaminated, even Canada. The true meaning of democracy is crumbling under the heavy boot of government.

Forget the flowers and give us a break

I am going to be late in the paying of my property taxes for the first time in over 10 years that I have owned my home in part because I have experienced a 20 per cent increase on my core area property. Because this year’s tax increases are unconscionably large and hopefully a one-time event, I think city hall should offer a one-month interest holiday on the amounts owing. P.S. Given a choice between a city full of dingy, overwatered flower baskets or one month of interest amnesty, I would choose the latter.

Make your pooch a priority

Re: the Sound Off in June 26 paper, “Owners Need To Keep A Closer Watch On Their Hound Dogs.” About the unwanted litters of pups, this person should be responsible for their own dog! Years ago we had a female dog and due to financial expense we could not afford to spay her. We did not have a fence surrounding our house and guess what? Our dog never had puppies because we watched her like a hawk! So please take some responsibility for your own dog’s reproductive health!

There are preventative measures

I have to laugh at the Sound Off about the dogs in June 26 paper. If you don’t want your dog knocked up then either do something about it so it never happens again or maybe you are not watching your dog closely enough. You can buy a bark control system at the store that looks like a birdhouse and it might help your situation.

Cautionary stop

Response to Sixth Street and Queens Avenue intersection. The obvious reason why people stop on Sixth Street at that corner is because there is a marked crosswalk! There is no stop sign but a marked crosswalk, if occupied, you must stop at.
