Sound Off -- June 5, 2012

Not everyone has family to rely on

Regarding the Sound Off, “Find Your Own Way” about busing kids to shop and home economics classes. I believe that the Brandon School Division should be responsible for transportation if it is a mandatory class. Not every child has an aunt, uncle or grandparent and not every employer is willing to accommodate the lunch hours which are required to transport their kids from school to school. Before someone makes a judgment call, do you realize that when other people are used to transport kids it becomes an insurance issue and when a child is attending school during the school hours they are the full responsibility of the division.

Diagonal parking on wrong side!

Having had the chance to visit some smaller communities in Westman over the past weeks, I have to say I’m quite concerned over the design of the downtown angle parking in Brandon. It’s been placed on the wrong side of the roadway! This makes it difficult and even dangerous to back out checking over your left shoulder versus your right. Does the city not have a traffic design specialist on staff? If not, it should and changes to the design need to be made this summer.

Take your small views to a smaller community

I read Sound Off and enjoy some people’s comments. Lately, I’ve read so many griping and groaning comments about the future of Brandon. It would appear that many people here do not want Brandon to be a progressive city. All-day Sunday shopping is a gimme in places like Victoria (a city full of retirees). If you want to go to church and have your day of rest, please do so and leave others out of your choice. A casino, why not? You don’t have to go. The addiction of gambling already exists and hopefully doesn’t affect you and there is treatment here in our own city. I’m an early baby boomer (1946), retired and I can’t understand so many people standing in the way of progress. I’m not alone in this — many others are shaking their heads, too! Maybe you should move to a smaller community.

Thanks from a grateful customer

We would like to send a big bouquet to the staff at the Great Canadian Oil Change. They are not only great at their job but awesome at making life easier for people with disabilities.

Get off the road

RCMP, when you pull someone over on the highway for the “heinous” crime of speeding, pull all the way off onto the shoulder, not halfway in the middle of the highway. You are a hazard not only to yourself, but the person you have pulled over and the traffic behind you. If it was me, I’d issue you the ticket for imprudent parking or just plain stupidity. Use some comment sense, maybe workplace health and safety should pay you a visit?

We look after ourselves

To the person who felt the need to Sound Off about the CP Rail strike, you’re simply jealous that these workers have found a job that pays a “living” wage. They paid into their pensions, easing the future burden on the taxpayer as opposed to relying on government for handouts when they retire. Can you say the same?

You’re messing up my view

Well it’s started already, the baskets of flowers are being put out and here come the yard sale signs, right in front of the flowers or stuck right in the middle! There are plenty of boulevards in this city, why do people want to make a mess? If we can’t trust people to not do this, can the city not do something about it? Is there not a bylaw to deal with this issue?
