Sound Off -- March 1, 2014

Government also criminals

I see the Manitoba NDP government now considers the Hells Angels a criminal organization. They should include themselves as a criminal organization and put their name on the list given they are collecting PST illegally from every citizen of Manitoba.

Thanks for the mess on the street

The city has posted signs on Rosser Avenue west of 18th Street stating, “Snow route — no parking from 12 a.m. to 8 a.m.” When a snow-parking ban is in effect, why are cars that are parked not ticketed or towed away? The grader goes around them and leaves a heck of a mess. These vehicles should be ticketed.

Landlords, you do have some responsibilities yourself

Landlords, when you have set guidelines for your rental properties, do you ask for references? Not all culprits are dogs and cats, people also do damage. They kick in walls, break windows and screens, mark carpets, scratch lino and wood, never clean and let kids write on walls, even in closets, with whatever marking utensil! Some of the onus is on you yourself. Do you ever physically check your residences? If the unit is bad, tenants should never have their damage deposits returned. Also, tenants can be evicted.

Seats need improving

I attended hockey games at the Optimist and Kinsmen rinks this past weekend. It just amazes me how unsafe the bleachers are in both rinks. I don’t think that the Keystone Centre realizes how much money is brought in by youth hockey and other activities that utilize these rinks. It is about time that some updates are done on the lower level and not just the main concourse.

All-day kindergarten not the way to go

So Brandon School Division will fire 11 teachers and still raise taxes three per cent. I suggest nipping a new program in the bud, saving money now and for the future. I refer to the pilot program all-day kindergarten, which will double the number of teachers and aides required for each class — far more than the 11 let go in this budget. We’ve survived with half-time kindergarten for generations with no ill effects. This isn’t the time to be introducing new frills.

Minot did it right and so did we

Regarding a casino here in Brandon. There are some benefits, but mostly benefits against us. Just look at Minot. They don’t have a casino. You have to go 12 miles south to play. They voted it down, too, for the same reasons we did.

Casino near Carberry could have been ours

Brandon must be the laughingstock of the province — or even Western Canada — for turning down the opportunity to enjoy a casino in this city. Now we must watch the development of the project to the east of us and watch as our civic leaders try to make the best of a bad situation. We are going to lose tourist money and jobs to that casino, while reaping none of the benefits. What an embarrassment. Nobody said no to the casino in Carberry or Glenboro. And the first nations that will be running the casino between those two communities eagerly went for it.

You have got to be dreaming!

Whoever wrote to Sound Off saying if we had a casino in Brandon that taxes would not rise, shake your head! You must be dreaming. Even if we had 10 casinos, they would still raise our taxes.

Time to get criminals off the street

What was the judge thinking about, letting two teenagers back out after they beat someone and where carrying weapons? Thank heavens for the passerby that got the victim out of there. It could have been a lot worse. It sounds like these punks have already started their criminal career. These judges need to get them off the streets.

Justin has changed my mind

Young Trudeau was on television recently, and if I was partially involved before he spoke, I am strictly in his favour now. I have not been a Liberal all my life because 20 years of my life was with military and I had to support the governing party at that time, but Justin Trudeau at the meeting has changed my mind.
