Cherry-pickin’ Christians at it again

Once again the Christian church has reared it's head to suppress human rights to an oppressed minority using as their moral code an ancient text which supports slavery, misogyny and the stoning of disobedient children and unfaithful wives. I realize that every Christian “cherry picks” the bible to construct their personal moral code. The same book in the bible that condemns homosexuality also condemns the eating of shellfish, so if you've eaten lobster or shrimp lately maybe you should get on your knees and ask forgiveness for your ‘holier than thou” hypocrisy.

You know what they say about people in glass houses

Just a reminder to those of you who are casting stones against the city firefighter and their abuse of sick time. Perhaps take a look at your own use to sick time. Are you sure you have never taken a day off just because it was there or because you wanted to stay out late the night before? I think there would be a few of you who should also be hanging your heads. Seems to me if a bonus was in place for those people who do not abuse the allotted sick days you would have less abuse going on.

Use them or lose them mentality?

All the evidence of sick time leads me to believe that there must be a clause in city contracts that they are allowed so many sick days per year or you lose them. Most people who just book off sick for one day are possibly abusing the system, perhaps if they were required to bring a note from the doctor saying they are now fit to return to work they would think twice about taking a day off because it is there right to do so as per the collective agreement. Firemen have the highest amount of sick days, you may think this is due to the environment they work in, with all the safety equipment they have at their disposal this should be a none issue. There are other companies in Brandon that deal with very hazardous chemicals and stress every day, it would be very interesting to see their days booked off sick.

Firefighters’ abuse of sick time is making me sick

I’m disgusted that in this day and age our “beloved” firefighters have the gall to ask the public to pay for a 17 per cent raise in wages, not to mention the 30-per-cent benefit increase. As I read the articles in the March 8 Brandon Sun about the abuse in sick time and the unions requested increases for firefighter and E911 dispatchers, I can’t help but feel relieved that I’m not part of this disgusting union and their over-the-top requests. Here is a hint from a regular working class taxpayer ... take your two per cent increases for two years, go to work every day and be happy that you’re getting more of an increase that most other taxpayers in Brandon.

Need a check on sick time

Regarding the sick time for firefighters and others. Our poor firefighters need two jobs. What these people are doing is booking sick time and going to work other places, I know this. I have seen this in construction and other places, not only in the city departments but in other institutions and government places. Where are the doctor’s certificates? I thought there was supposed to be certificates before they booked sick time.

Thanks for bringing us the news

Big thank you to my south end Brandon Sun carrier. She never misses delivering your paper no matter what the weather is. You’re the best Alex. Thanks!

A very un-Christian thing to say

I am a 73-year-old, white, Anglo-Saxon, Christian grandmother and I feel that what the Steinbach pastor is doing and saying is completely wrong and un-Christian because Jesus would accept everyone. This man should not be having as much publicity as he is having.
