Firefighters no more important than the rest
Wow, just read the retired firefighter’s Letter To The Editor. Just how many times a year do you have to go into a burning building and pull out a 200-pound victim? And when a firefighter is sick, they are different than the rest of us? There you are slamming the police, talking about them sitting in a squad car — do you not realize the conditions that they work in constantly? If there is extreme weather conditions, the police can’t say no, and they sure can’t go back to the station and bed down can they? This glorifying of your fire department has to stop, you are a part of services that help people in need, but you are no more important than the police! When people need a firefighter or ambulance service, they are grateful for your help, obviously. When do the police get a smile and a thanks so much for when they have to do their job?
Walk a mile in our shoes
My husband is a volunteer firefighter in a small rural town and over the years has missed out on numerous special family occasions, family time, time away from work, sleep, etc. He puts his life on the line for people he doesn’t even know and I always carry a fear that even on a routine call he may never come home to me and my children again. For someone to complain about city firefighters being paid for sleep time is an insult to them and their families. Minutes can make a difference in an emergency situation. I’d rather see the responders well rested and alert if it’s me or my family’s life on the line!
Start living within your means like the rest of us
Re: The Brandon Sun on March 12 and Mark Sefton and the school boards on students and taxpayers concerns. You people need to do a better job than just talk. Start cutting back on bureaucracy and other areas by 8.2 per cent. And why do we need all these trustees? You people think that everybody can afford your increase? Try living on a government old age security. In all the years we paid school taxes, we did not have such a huge increases. For shame on you. Where is the money the government gave the school board? I think you people need to live within your means. Times are tough. All government are cutting back and so should the school board. I don’t think the school board is concerned about the taxpayer at all and it is about time they started thinking about us.
Rather have them educated
This is addressed to everyone who complains about school taxes. Having children who are currently in school is not the reason that I pay my school taxes. I pay school taxes because education makes the world a better place. Our school system is not perfect, but we are all better off for having it.
To the residents of Massey Manor
You can consider yourselves very fortunate to have the opportunity to move and live in such nice digs. Don’t allow all the people who said “I told you so” predict trouble and police attendance to your building. Don’t let them be right. Don’t let persons unknown to you inside the building when they don’t live there. Don’t jar the door open with obstructions for others. Also inform your building manager that the Seventh Street entrance door doesn’t shut well when it closes or when people leave.
Don’t group us all together
Regarding the recent Sound Off, “Cherry-Pickin’ Christians Are At It Again.” I am a Christian and I do not agree with this minister in Steinbach. As Christians we are to love our neighbours as ourselves. Those who are homosexuals are our neighbours. I hope the person who wrote this Sound Off does not think all Christians have the same attitude about this matter.
Let them sleep
Regarding the issue with the firefighters. I don’t have an issue with them sleeping at night as long as they are awake, alert and at their best should anyone need them. I don’t get paid to sleep, but I also don’t run into burning buildings or attend gruesome accidents. I call it even. The sick time is a separate issue and usually points to an unsatisfying work environment, which could mean anything and everything; it needs attention from the city and fire service management as well as the firefighters themselves. Let’s not forget the taxpayers; we have a responsibility to voice our dissatisfaction with how our city and services are managed too.

A very big thank you to Superstore this winter for keeping the perimeter of their store clear of snow! I appreciate this as I walk every day in that area!
