Government doing their job

Yes, the Manitoba government is doing a good job. Yes, we are paying our bills. Yes, I am glad I voted for them.

Pay attention to road conditions

I am just wondering why after the highways were closed were there still 70 some cars and trucks out there stranded. I guess we have to build a wall to get the message to people not to drive when the weather is like that.

Thanks for plowing us out!

Many thanks, City of Brandon, for working around the clock removing snow this week.

Developers should pay fair share

Development or growth charges belong exactly where they are supposed to be and that is with our builders/developers. They need to pay their fair share and not be expecting all residents to back their projects through property taxes. Take a look at other cities on the Prairies, it is common practice and council needs to make the right decision this time around and not bend for developer interests!

Yak it up somewhere else

To the woman that feels it is fine to visit with their shopping carts blocking the aisle in the grocery store. If you want to visit do it in the coffee shop or at home. Most people are considerate and ensure shoppers can get past. It is absolutely ignorant to block an aisle for 10 or 15 minutes to yak, yak, yak!

Build a wall??? How about a gate? I was travelling home from Winnipeg the day the storm was to hit. Two weather websites checked, highways website checked and listening to the local radio as I drove west. Even stopped in Portage to check all sites again. They told me the snow wasn't going to hit until 9pm. So at 6pm I thought I could make it to Brandon. It was only a phone call from my husband, which yes, I illegally answered while driving, told me Carberry to Brandon had been closed. But too late, the white out hit before I had the chance to turn around. There had been nothing at the Carberry turn off to tell me it was closed.

So where is the lack of communication that got all those people caught? I luckily made it to Brandon but just as easily could have been stranded as well. I am disappointed in the radio. I believe its the only avenue I had to know about road closures. I don't know anything about the structure of radio air time but with such a huge and dangerous weather system, they should have been announcing road/weather conditions very, very frequently!! Websites just aren't updated quickly enough and as I was driving alone, the radio is my only assistance.

How is it assessed to make the decision to close a highway? Is someone out there in real time checking it out? Then that someone should have had a gate to close at Carberry/#1 junction. And, whatever junction west of Brandon that would have prevented the 70 or so car pile up there.
