Sound Off -- March 31, 2014

Time unions closed the gap

I thought the purpose of unions was to support their members and ensure that they were all treated fairly. The use of percentage increases for their members is not an equitable system. If all members were given equal raises instead of percentage raises, we wouldn’t have the increasing wage spread which causes some of the members to suffer poor living conditions and the inability to afford decent housing. It appears that the union leaders can’t or don’t want to get the wage spread under control. It is long past time for union leaders and members to take a long look at the problem they are causing and do what is necessary to close the unacceptable and ever increasing wage gap.

Administrators need to get in the classroom

I agree with the previous Sound Off that if we cut teachers we should cut proportional number of administrators at the main office. Less teachers probably means more split classes and more multi-grade/multi-age classes, which most other school districts in Canada and the United States are moving away from because they have found students don’t learn as well in such situations and test scores go down. So why are Brandon schools moving backwards instead of forward? When was the last time any of the top administrators ever spent a few days teaching lessons in an actual classroom and working with our children face-to-face? Can people really make decisions about our children’s future when they don’t know what it is like to actually work in a classroom and understand the needs and concerns of all of the children? There is more to education than sitting in a office doing paperwork.

Breathe at your own risk

The brochure recently inserted in the Brandon Sun for Brandon University’s Mini-University contained an interesting advert from the Lung Association stating that “My home is smoke free.” Interesting, that; or perverse, considering Brandon University is so regressive as to still have a number of outdoor designated smoking areas on its property. Not that the majority of smokers get to them, but rather also can be easily found puffing away anywhere they feel like it — probably being terminally short of breath — usually right outside various doors. I believe the present, and progressive, consensus is that no amount of exposure to cigarette smoke is safe. Be sure to put gas masks in little Jack and Jill’s backpacks!
