Sound Off -- May 12, 2012

Out among her peeps

On Tuesday, I was going south on 12th or 13th Street and did a double-take. There was our mayor standing and chatting with the workers filling the potholes. How many mayors actually get out into their city to see how the work is done? Well done, Shari! Keep up the good work!

Mmm, chocolate

Gambling is a lot like chocolate. If it is in the cupboard, you eat it.

A casino is inevitable, so let’s get it right

It’s about time things started moving on a casino. Just because more than half of the people who voted did not want a casino, that does not mean that they should be able to tell those of us that do that we can’t have one. They can choose not to frequent the casino and, if they feel strongly enough, they can refuse to take advantage of any other amenities that are supported by casino-generated city funds. It is inevitable that eventually there will be a casino in or very near Brandon. Let’s stop fighting it and make certain that it is in the right place and is implemented in a way that provides the greatest benefit to the community.

Payment for actions doesn’t have to be money

Regarding the story in the paper on May 8 about the young girl getting no consequences for her actions. She can beat people, spit on a teacher, breached an order already and lit fire to a trailer. Bottom line, you’re saying there are no consequences because she has no job. She could work a month for each person she did stuff to. She’s laughing at the system and has no intentions of obeying the probation. What a joke!

We pay taxes for your kids

To the people who object to taxpayers funding the dog parks in Brandon. Your objection is noted. But let me remind you that the same dog owners that you refer to, many of which don’t have kids, still pay school taxes. Do you think this is fair? We fund your kids’ schooling, their publicly sponsored sports programs, their skate park, just to name a few. So try to consider this before you sound off. In response from dog lovers everywhere.

This all just seems wrong to me

Brandon never wanted a casino and now that three First Nations bands have an opportunity to open one on their own land in the RM of Elton, the city now wants to consider having one. Seems kind of odd, doesn’t it? I guess the plebiscites didn’t mean anything, or maybe they just don’t want anyone else to prosper.

Grab the money and run

A couple of months ago it was rather upsetting to hear of the federal budget cutting life pension benefits to our heroes, the servicemen who gave so much of themselves, when ordered, in the name of peace. Seeing visually on the news on May 10 a first-hand report from a serviceman brought on even stronger feelings of disgust toward our rulers in Ottawa. How can they sleep at night knowing how much anguish they are causing those who should be assisted the most? As a citizen who has long been a supporter, the feeling now is one of shame for our federal government.

Out with the old — in with the new

Why are we trying to put good money toward a building which is in bad shape? Knock it down and build something nice to set off 10th Street. Plus, the committee should be raising money to build a new building. No wonder the federal government turned them down. They have not raised a cent themselves. And the city keeps putting more of our money through Brandon Renaissance into the building. Why?

What’s on your ipod, Drew?

Perhaps the Brandon Sun should file a Freedom of Information request to have a look at Drew’s iPod. His current playlist: “I Don’t Strand a Ghost of a Chance with You,” “I Saw Her Stranding There,” “Don’t Strand So Close to Me,” and of course, “What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Under-Stranding?”

Extended Sunday shopping hours should be a choice

Get with the times. Let the stores open if they wish to and those that do not want to open can stay closed. In United States, a lot of stores are open by 8 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. All you have to do is go and take a look to see who is open and who is closed, their decision. Nothing is forced on them.
