On the subject of tipping
I do not tip the service I get at any restaurant and have been embarrassed by friends and family. It seems almost mandatory to tip. I will tip those deserving of tips, like the grocery clerk, the gas pump attendant, the mechanic who services my vehicle, cleans my windshield and checks my tires ( only one gas station attendant does that, so guess where I always go). I begin to feel that some restaurants feel that it is mandatory to tip when I pay my bill.
It isn’t just gambling
The people I see making comments about a casino bringing crime to town and destroying the “slow-paced” family atmosphere in Brandon are so far out to lunch, they’re at supper! A casino isn’t just about gambling. It’s also about entertainment. And it will also allow our shop owners to make more money as there will be thousands of new visitors to town each year. Many of them families. Few of them criminals.
Why not a whole page
Why doesn’t the Brandon Sun print a whole page of Sound Offs every day? I find that most discussions about the Sun seem to be about Sound Off and Letters to the Editor.
Cutting corners ... and insulation
Why is it that most new apartment blocks are so not sound-proofed? Shouldn't that be part of the building codes? It’s not just loud music, but even normal conversations that you can hear. With the housing shortage in Brandon, it looks like a lot of corners are being cut as builders know people have no choice but to rent what they can get. It lowers the quality of life.
If we are to share the burden, let’s also share the benefits
To the people who are lambasting the mayor and council for revisiting the casino issue — give your heads a shake, people! It is the mayor and council’s job to look into this issue because if the casino is built near Brandon and Brandon is not involved, the city will suffer the consequences of a nearby casino but will not be privy to any of the benefits. If this happens and Brandon is not involved all taxpayers will be footing the bill and all you naysayers will probably be the first ones to complain about the extra costs in taxes.
Time for a change in the law
It’s time for a response to those who are so vehemently against cyclists on the sidewalk. As a pedestrian, a cyclist and a motorist, I feel the sidewalks are the safest place for cyclists to ride, especially along main arteries at busy times of the day. Sidewalks should be considered extensions of bike and walking paths, which are meant to be shared. A cyclist sharing the road with 5,000 pounds of steel driven by some who, let’s face it, are not always paying 100 per cent attention, does not have a chance in a collision.
