Sound Off! -- May 24, 2012

Let’s talk about the weather

Is it not time for The Weather Network to move its equipment into Brandon as opposed to the Brandon airport, which is miles away from where most of us live? I can get a more accurate forecast by looking out of my window or by the temperature reading on my car.

Parents should learn the language

I am responding to Leslie Allen’s comments in the Saturday paper regarding the new English language proficiency requirements for immigrants. She states the poor immigrants work so hard at Maple Leaf they are too tired to study English. My question is: does she feel Brandon taxpayers should continue to cover the costs of teaching the Maple Leaf workers’ children to speak English in the schools? The EAL program costs an enormous amount of money and continues to grow. Why shouldn’t the parents speak English and teach their children? Why should we have to cover the cost?

Disappointed with tabloid headline

Referring to Vincent Li as the “Bus beheader” in your headline made the Sun look like a cheap tabloid. He has a name, he is a person. Shame on you.

Firefighters deserve an apology

City Hall and the management at the fire hall owe the firefighters and their families a apology. Some people were quick to assume Wade Ritchie must have done something very wrong to be fired. People were quick to assume the firefighters were simply backing up Ritchie because he was one of them. The firefighters are professionals who care about the safety of the citizens of Brandon. We need to care about their working conditions, so that when they respond to a call helping us, they are in the right mindset to do their jobs.

Slow drivers are hazardous

I travel Highway 10 south and north often for work and would like to say to other drivers using single-lane highways, if you or your vehicle is not capable of driving the speed limit, stay off the road. We are often told speed kills, but slow drivers are an equal threat, in my opinion on those roads, especially with no passing lanes.

Are you plugging both meters?

Why do some of our drivers in this city not know how to park? So many of them take two parking spots. Don’t they know enough to park between the parking meters, instead of having the meter halfway up the car? That can be expensive parking, if given a ticket.

Need a healthier choice

The car show all down Rosser Avenue last Thursday evening was really something. But it was hard to get something wholesome to eat, as a lot restaurants that usually stay open, for the event, closed up early, as the street vendors took over every block. Do they not need a special licence for a downtown event or can they just roam the city, selling junk food? I agree the food tastes great, but it’s not healthy, it makes everyone obese.

Avoid roadkill

Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk when vehicle traffic is heavy or on a major thoroughfare shouldn’t be a problem if the cyclist uses courtesy when approaching pedestrians. Slow down and pass with caution. It may not be ideal, but beats ending up as roadkill.
