What has our country gone to with Sunday shopping?
We lived without it for so long and now people are obsessed and they can’t live without it. Why not extend shopping to 9 p.m. on Saturdays like Brandon has and forget extended Sunday shopping? There is more than enough time for shopping, even for shift workers. Some stores stay open to 10 or 11 p.m. and open as early as 7 or 8 a.m. Maybe our banks and post offices should be open on Sundays, too. I can’t get to either one during the work week many times. I worked for three years on Sundays for one employer and I hated it. I couldn't take my mom for supper for her birthday or Mother's day or for family functions because I had to work. What happened about going to church on Sundays and a day of rest?
Out after midnight?
I just read where a 14-year-old boy was attacked at the Discovery Centre after midnight. I question what that boy was doing out after midnight at the age of 14. It is ridiculous. Does the family not have any care of that boy?
Wasted money on Dome building
Mayor Shari is in the news about the Keystone needing money for all the renos because it is falling apart. Think of all the renovations that could have been done with the money that was wasted on the Dome building. I see no purpose in the Dome building except for storage but people do use the Keystone Centre for all those events and hockey. So I think the money could have been better spent.
Please people — get your facts straight
In regards to “Ridiculous Comparison” in Saturday’s Sound Off. The author makes some great points. However, to say that schizophrenia is a disease and alcoholism is a disease — excuse me, but alcoholism is an “addiction,” like a drug addiction is an addiction or like an addiction to greasy foods or to sex or whatever. I really, really wish that people would get that fact straight and stop this nonsense about alcoholism being a disease — it is an addiction.
Regarding Health-Care reform
The Selinger government, in what we hope is their wisdom has decided to take 11 regions down to five. We feel these regions are too big — Swan River to the U.S. border, Saskatchewan border east to Ste. Rose, Neepawa and Treherne. We agree something has to be done! We also noticed in the paper a list of openings at the Assiniboine RHA: 40 health-care aides, 39 LPNs, 50 RNs, 37 home care and 14 paramedic positions — for a total of 170 people. We ask why did these people leave Assiniboine and these vacancies? And why haven’t these positions been filled? We hope government will meet with stakeholders to discuss qualifications needed for a suitable CEO and that the people will feel they have input.

In regards to the May 23 article “Local MLAs Face Off At Legislature,” I have to say that I find it appalling that certain government officials continue to find ways to further erode the rights of workers. Using the guise of caring about students is interesting because students will soon be workers who would hope to have their interests taken care of. Thank you Mr. Caldwell for really giving a damn about Brandon University.
