Sound Off! -- May 9, 2012

Start using their heads too!

Well it is great that they are introducing helmets for people on bikes ... but it would be even greater if they introduced the old rules of riding the bike on the right-hand side of the road and using your hand signals and not plowing down the sidewalks and running over people.

Show a little respect

I am not over religious, but do not agree with the government allowing full-day shopping on Sunday. Is it to just collect more sales tax for a government who over spent and now we taxpayers of Manitoba have to pay the price? I think there should be more respect for Sundays.

Feel free to move

In regards to all the people complaining about not having a casino in Brandon and how well it benefits other communities, I think if they don’t like Brandon not having a casino then maybe they should move to one of those communities that does and stop bringing up and harping on an old issue.

Don’t hold us back

Well done, James O’Connor. Good article on Saturday. It’s high time the nameless, faceless critics in this town were called out. It’s unfortunate that every — and I mean EVERY — worthy project in this city has to become a target to be mercilessly booted around by people that have no interest in the outcome. They find their banner to hide behind, whether it is politics, religion, finances or some other shield of convenience. Energy needs to be dedicated to pushing our city forward, competing and beating other cities for the attention of new residents and taxpayers. We should not be squandering our efforts on dealing with those that would hold us back. It’s simply not productive and, frankly, makes us look foolish as a community.

Time for a name change?

After reading the editorial in Monday’s paper and then again on Tuesday, I was just wondering when the announcement was going to come that the The Brandon Sun is going to change its name to The Brandon Socialist?

Give money to people not band leaders

In this day and age, why are we still talking treaties? Being on a reserve is an experience I wish on no one. I think the government should give us individuals the money that is received at the band office, we can pay for services provided like a town. Right now, giving it to the band is not working — always in debt. Let’s try that for self-government. Any chiefs out there willing to try? It will take poverty away. Isn’t there some rights being violated by letting governments and band leaders misspend. I can live quite well on the per capita the rez gets.
