Everyone wants everything!
Regarding the Sound Off “We Need Better Assistance” from the provincial government? Are you kidding me, how about assisting yourself and getting a job? The whining about IKEA going to Winnipeg, do you not realize the population of that city? Years ago, the majority of people were dirt poor, they worked hard and did without, now everyone wants everything and if they can’t get it, they want some level of government to help them! Why should three levels of taxpayers dollars pay for your life?
I have had it with political correctness
Watching the Santa Claus parade, it was a joy to hear the children on the floats yelling “Merry Christmas” to everyone and not “Happy Holidays.” Hopefully we get Christmas back before they ban Santa Claus and his parade. Now just a word to local businesses, if you have happy holidays on your windows instead of Merry Christmas, I personally will be boycotting your store.
Respect starts at home
With reference to Remembrance Day. We attend the ceremonies to honour and show respect for our fallen soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom, as we all should. But to force young children who don’t yet understand war, haven’t learned what respect is yet from their parents, and really have no idea why they have to attend what is to them a boring ceremony, is not them showing any respect. Once they learn and understand, that is the time for them to attend. You cannot force people to respect anything. They have to be taught what it represents first, then make their minds up for themselves. I have never seen forced respect that is worth anything, it has to be earned from that person. Premier Selinger is doing the right thing. Start teaching your kids what respect is and they will do the right thing.
Typical Conservative thinking
I totally agree with Brian Pallister that the personal exemptions should be raised for middle- and low-income people. But since that would give a loss of $140 million in taxes, possibly we could raise the taxes paid on the rich in the province to cover that loss in revenue. I have a feeling he won’t agree with that, taxing his rich friends and donors. I wish he could make up his mind. Does he want a smaller debt for the province or a larger one? Typical Conservative thinking, he should go back to Ottawa if he wants to think like them.
All for one and one for all
Our provincial government introduced a sales tax of seven per cent on all home and business insurance policies this year. How is it fair when farm insurance policies are exempt? Speak up, people!
Nice to see someone thinking of us taxpayers
Nice to see some councillors making a decision with taxpayers’ best interest in mind. I'm talking about the sale of the former police station and building for a private developer’s assisted living complex. Finally some common sense! Now to address the shortage of housing poor people can afford, they need to lobby the people in charge of affordable housing — the provincial government! Coun. Jim McCrae (Meadows) was right, this burden should not be placed on the citizens of Brandon!
Blinded by the light
Why are so many drivers travelling around town with their vehicle’s fog lights switched on? According to the Highway Traffic Act, fog lights are to be used to light the road only in conditions where visibility is reduced (such as fog!). It seems every other vehicle you meet on the road lately has their fog lights, as well as headlights ablaze, even when the weather is clear and dry. Please, show some courtesy and stop blinding oncoming drivers. Thanks!
First come, first served
To the person who was complaining about no free hot chocolate for their children at the Santa parade, did you not read that it was first come, first served? Why did you not get there early enough to take advantage of this generous offer? By all accounts there was four to five thousand people enjoying this year’s parade and you think that the city should provide a free drink to all? Holy tax dollars!
Not a life or death problem
I can’t believe that someone is complaining about wait times to see a urologist! There are other serious health issues that men and women have to see this specialist for and you are worried about not having an erection? Please, a lack of sexual intercourse never killed anyone!
Long, cold wait for parade
Being a veteran, I am very impressed by Remembrance Day and support it to the fullest. Due to medical reasons, I had to watch many different services on television where the parades were being shown and they were very well shown. But there was one parade where old and handicapped persons had to wait several hours on the streets, and they looked so cold and uncomfortable waiting for the parade. I think they need to do something about this. That was a long wait for those people.
