Sound Off -- Nov. 24, 2012

What is the Discovery Centre used for then?

I always thought that was the reason for the Discovery Centre, for rallies, relays, etc., for visitors to Brandon, to see what was going on in Brandon. I guess that’s why the Relay For Life was so successful there. The same as Brandon’s winter lights display would be, if set up there.

Price of a cup of coffee

I realize the price of coffee in restaurants, in comparison to the price of a can of coffee, is high especially when stopping for a coffee break, but that is due to the people who stay for an hour or so and drink cup, after cup, after cup. I don’t know why some restaurant owners aren’t smart enough to include coffee in the price of breakfast and meals, or to charge $1 for the first cup and 25 or 50 cents a cup for refills, instead of $2 or $2.50 a cup, for what costs them “11 cents” a cup, cream and sugar included. They would probably see an increase of customers.

Humane treatment necessary

I totally agree with the sentiments expressed by Neil Peacock of the National Farmers Union. All livestock must be treated humanely during their lives and deaths. I hope this message reaches the hog industry where sows are often kept in such small cages they can’t even turn around. We do have a moral responsibility to ensure that we do not mistreat these animals.

Need a mentoring program

I know there are places in Brandon like Samaritan House or Women’s Resource or Brandon Literacy Council where they teach women’s skills. Is there a program in Brandon where someone can get hands-on-training, like if they wanted to be a secretary or hairdresser or something where they could go into the workplace and volunteer their time and they would get the skills that they need and they can see if this is the line of work that they want to do? Does anyone have any suggestions of a mentoring program in Brandon? Look forward to seeing a response. A lot of women don’t have the money to go to school for nine months and pay the money to go to college so if they were to do this, they may just get a foot in the door.

Free busing for anything taught in French?

Why do students who take French get bused all over the city but those who take shop and home ec don’t get any kind of busing? That just doesn’t seem fair to me. Maybe they should start to teach shop and home ec in French and then they would maybe get free busing.

Forget the perfume — just have a shower

In response the Brandon School Division wanting to ban perfume or fragrances, if people don’t have the respect of other people who cannot handle perfume, not only at the hospitals and school it is also in churches as well. They say if we don’t like it we should leave. Does that mean that we should leave our house of worship? These people who cannot handle the smell of perfume should be able to have a life, too. Perfume is deadly to some people. People should understand and have a little bit more consideration than what they have. Some people just bathe in it and don’t know how to wear it properly, and some of it is just so strong. I just don’t understand what it is all about. If you have a good shower, then you don’t need to use perfume. We would like to be able to breathe, too.

Butt out and we will quit smelling the place up

In response to the Sound Off “Smelling The Place Up.” I am sure people will quit using perfumed fragrances when health-care workers and the public office workers quit smoking outside their buildings and coming back in smelling like a cigarette. Their clothes just reek when you go near them. So when all that happens, I am sure people will adhere to not using perfumed fragrances.

Pick up a shovel — you’ll be fine

To the lady who was upset about having to shovel her driveway. I am a senior female who went out and shovelled my driveway mostly because my neighbour left their truck parked on the street and the plow couldn’t clean the street properly. And I have been shovelling snow for 30 or 40 years, ever since I had a house and I think she would be better to get out and use her energy to shovel some snow instead of being upset cause her husband is at work and she had to shovel her driveway. And as far as having a heart attack, well, I have also had heart surgery!
