Sound Off! -- Nov. 29, 2012

Ohhh, now you can get a bus to the Corral Centre

This is addressed to our city councillors and transit drivers: Please tell me how you can get a city bus into the Corral Centre for Christmas Cheer donations when we seem to be unable to include the Corral Centre on a bus route. People, young and old, have to use 18th Street or Kirkcaldy Avenue to access any bus. The walk in the summer is great, but winter months are most difficult when pushing a stroller and carrying any purchases. Please think of our citizens.

Priceless!

I had to laugh when I read the article on the new police board. The former chief indicates the board will “hold the force to a higher level of financial scrutiny.” Wasn’t he the chief who parked police cars and instructed members to only do “static patrols” due to the service going over the fuel budget? A few weeks later it was determined they weren't over budget, but this was an “accounting error” and patrols returned to normal. Your memory may be short but the citizens of Brandon remember.

A pathetic act

To the person/persons who left the two little Labrador puppies in a tied bag on the highway, you don’t even deserve to be called human beings. How pathetic you are. If you even have a conscience, I hope it comes back to haunt you for a long time.

Thanks to a good Samaritan

My heartfelt thanks to the good Samaritan who turned my purse in to customer services on Nov. 21. Thank you so much.

Just way too easy now to take advantage

I just read in Sound Off about the abusers of the system. When I was 15 years old (and that was 70 years ago) I was in that situation where I either had to work or starve. And had there been the assistance then that there is now, I may have turned to that — it would have been the easier, softer way. But as I couldn’t do that I had to take work. I started to work at 15 and I retired at 78 and I never missed a payday and I never had to ask for money from anyone. I think that the opportunity prevails and I think a lot of the young people nowadays take the easy way out and that easy way out should be made not so easy. I don’t think any person in good health should be walking around with a cellphone and a package of cigarettes in his pockets and going for a free meal.

Stuck in a rut

In regards to the back lane garbage pickup. It is almost impossible to drag these bins across the back lane, especially when the city plows come and leave big drifts of snow behind. It is hard to drag these bins over the ridge of snow, I know I can’t do it. They should have left the big brown bins for garbage and let everyone recycle as before.

Lost in the back lane

Interestingly enough on Nov. 9, I was the recipient of a registered first offence notice from the City of Brandon (postage to mail $8.86) regarding the implementation of the tough-on-trash-cans bylaw. The only problem with the notice was that it was my neighbour who should have been on the receiving end of the first-offence registered notice, not me, as my trash cans were inside my fence and on my property. The bylaw enforcement officer apparently needs to be more spatially aware (carry a GPS at all times) as he mistakenly wrote down my address instead of my neighbour’s (both addresses in plain sight). If the City of Brandon is going to continue to enforce this bylaw, they should be sure they are at least notifying the appropriate offenders!
