Well, they are at it again!

You know those little bonuses you get from MPI once in a while, kiss them goodbye if this “funding for infrastructure” is agreed upon! If you think for a second that this money will remain in the highways budget, think again. As usual, the powers that be will be throwing good money after bad! Here’s a tip — listen to your accountant or someone in business, they may be able to advise our present government how to align costs and budget temporarily until there is a strange thing called a “surplus” in funds, then we would not have to take the money out of the taxpayer’s pocket yet again for blatant monetary mismanagement.

Just drive for the road conditions

It upsets me to have drivers criticizing the city or province for not sanding the roads as soon as snow starts to fall and then defy the laws (re: using studded tires, whether legal or not). Do they ever consider on slowing down due to road conditions? Perhaps a thousand vehicles navigate First Street North every day and only two or three enter the ditch due to snow and ice conditions. Does that not tell you something? Think before you drive.

Need a taste of reality

Firefighters do a very good job as do the police officers, correctional officers, health care workers etc., but the firefighters seem to think that they are a cut above everyone else and deserve a 17 per cent increase. Who in the economy, we have right now, is getting a 17 per cent increase, plus an increase in benefits? It is time the firefighters got realistic.

Bipole III must be included

The NDP has called for an independent review of all major Hydro projects. Except for Bipole III. Why is that? Got to agree with the Opposition Tories when they say, “The review must contain the Bipole III transmission line, including discussion of alternate routes. Without that it is incomplete.” The western route for that line is wrong. Is was a politically derived scheme by former premier Gary Doer. He’s gone now, so let’s re-think things and get it right.

Regarding the BU/ACC nursing partnership

If BU is going to allow ACC students into the bachelor of nursing program does that mean the students in the BU stream will have to compete with these students as well? The competition for the 48 seats in the BN program is already ridiculous, as there are far too many pre-nursing students hoping for a spot. With 112 pre-nursing students each year that means there are already 64, well over half, being turned away each year. BU and the province have many reasons for not increasing the 48 seats, so why add more competition for the woefully inadequate number of BN seats available? If the ACC students are going to be added to the mix, even more pre-nursing students will be forced out of the BU BN program. Will more seats be added at ACC to accommodate these new students? How will this be addressed so that the current BN students are not sent to the back of the line in favour of the new ACC students? We need more nurses! Let students from both schools have a chance to get their education and get working.

Hands are tied regarding bullying

In response to school division needs to take more action against bullies. I work in a school as a custodian and I see first hand how hard every adult is working to deal with bullying and its effects. The writer calls for more discipline — how I ask, when everything adults do in a school is monitored and regulated. The caller is most likely the first to scream if harsher discipline is used. In my opinion, give the teachers and the adults in the school and the system, time to work this out.
