Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION

Sound Off -- Oct. 9, 2012

Fair and balanced

The Strand Theatre rejuvenation/restoration project seems to receive an inordinate amount of media coverage, but at least the last round — played out Friday and Saturday in the pages of the Brandon Sun — presented the positions of both sides in a fair and balanced manner. And given that it pitted Premier Greg Selinger against MP Merv Tweed, it made for some interesting reading.

Tweed pulls the Strand

I fully agree with MP Merv Tweed’s comments on the Strand in Friday’s paper. He states that he has seen nothing to demonstrate that the Strand has taken steps towards fundraising. The Strand should get no funds from the provincial or federal government until they start to do something on their own, and they have not shown that to date.

The times are changing

In reply to “Remember When.” Yes, I remember no evening shopping and half-day closings on Wednesday afternoons. But, that is in the past. We are now looking for tourists, businesses and equality. It’s about time businesses could open and/or close at times of their own choice. They should be allowed to close at 6 p.m. and a half-day a week if they so choose, or stay open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, if they so choose. It is their business. Remember, half of the people already have to work shift-work every day of the year.

Move back in time

Yes I do remember when businesses closed at 6 p.m. except Fridays and Saturdays and half-day closings on Wednesdays. Those were very boring times when everyone went to Winnipeg to shop. I am now happy to forget those days. So for those lamenting those days you can always move to a small town where life is slower and you can drive to Brandon for your shopping.

Let the punishment fit the crime

If that young buck does not care how his victim felt after getting a shot of bear spray, why doesn’t he get a shot to see how he likes it? Probation and a pat on the head — jeepers!

Lacking judgment

@03.2 Sound Off Body Copy:Crimes committed by gang bangers with ties to the Indian Posse street gang and sentenced — for lack of a better term — to a joke of a sentence by the same judge. It is time to lock the gangsters up, throw away the key

or send them back to where they came from.

Speaking on our behalf

Many a time we talk about the City of Brandon or the School Division as the third person. Next time you look in the mirror, say to yourself, “I am the city,” or “I am the school board.” People we elect are our voices, not an independent institution. It is their responsibility to give us all information so we, the people, can make decisions. That is called democracy.

Where were the helmets?

There were some great photos of the skateboard park in the Brandon Sun, but not a helmet to be seen on one of those kids. Such a disappointment!

Keeping them occupied

The penal system is trying its very best with the resources it has. The guards and officials work very hard. The care is educational to the funding they have. There is much money needed for extra beds, rooms and to bring professional people in to supply courses, crafts and education. If the inmates don’t have some access to videos, TV, food, etc …, do you want fighting or mass destruction?

What is it the youth are lacking these days?

In regards to the youths who have been charged with arson — I have come to a conclusion. This is my opinion. Is this another case of youths falling through the cracks of the system? And I don’t mean to be ignorant or anything, but I am just wondering if we are missing the bigger picture of combined residential schools, inexperienced parents or coming from single parenting gone wrong. Authorities and foster-care workers should have been properly monitoring these youths late at night. I am curious because most 15-year-olds should be at home and sleeping.
