Who will have the bigger crowd?
Wednesday will be a busy night in Brandon as both the Liberal and Green parties hold their Brandon-Souris nomination meetings. The Liberals meet at the big room at the Royal Canadian Legion. The Greens at the tiny Park Community Centre. Even with Green Leader Elizabeth May in attendance, a few of us have a casual bet that the community club will still have empty seats. The big interest presently in this part of the world is with the Liberals, what with the dark cloud over the Conservative Party’s “nomination” process. And watch how many people will be out to mob Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, in here on Thursday.
It’s your paper, read it!
I’m always amazed when a group of us are gathered around the ‘water cooler,’ so to speak, at work and when people start talking about something they’ve seen in the Brandon Sun and someone says “Oh, I don’t read the Sun.” But then, they are so curious about what we’re talking about, it’s like we have to recount every last detail to them. While I don’t want to be rude and tell the person they should read their local paper — they really should read their local paper! I think we’re very lucky to have such a good paper for a city this size.
What really concerns me is the bonfire at that religious ceremony at Dinsdale Park that was in the paper the other day. Did they have a fire truck nearby? And who OK’d it? It would not take much for it to get uncontrollable. I am just wondering now if we can have a bonfire there and roast some hotdogs.
How about some affordable housing
I see from the map on Page 3 of Monday’s Sun, the city owns land at 26th Street and Maryland Avenue south of Maryland. Here's a great idea — instead of looking only at the money with sales, have the big developer donate enough land to Seniors Housing Co-op to build two affordable housing apartment blocks like the one on McDiarmid Drive. This would maybe show that the mayor and council actually do want to get affordable housing for seniors instead of just shooting off their mouths, then selling the land to the developer. Come on council, show you mean what you keep saying.
