Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION

Sound Off -- Sept. 12, 2012

Thanks to the tree banders

I would like to thank the volunteers on Clark Drive for the wonderful job they did banding our trees. You should be commended.

Thanks to the good people of Brookdale

The goodness of people is strong in Brookdale. I had a flat tire, and four people (you know who you are), came to my aid. You made what could have been a very miserable day a good day. Thank you.

Help out and ask for a ‘real cup’

Fast food franchises need to educate their customers about littering. Imagine how much takeout waste is produced in a single day just in Brandon alone. I discovered that the only way to order when “staying in” is to ask for a “real cup.”

We are not Winnipeg

What’s all the commotion about a private wine store in Brandon? Why are we always trying to be like Winnipeg? Are we forgetting that Winnipeg’s population sits at close to 700,000 and Brandon is maybe a little more than 47,000?

These are the real concerns

As a resident of Brookwood, I think some clarification is required relating to concerns of the proposed rezoning of 1660 34th St. I’m not aware of anyone being opposed to the idea of a condo development. At issue is the fact that the developer wishes to reduce standard side yard requirements of a condo from 7.6 metres to only 1.2 metres and reduce the minimum required front yard setback from six metres to only 1.5 metres. In an effort to squeeze 24 units into a relatively small space, the proposed street wouldn’t be wide enough to support two-way traffic nor would these residents be able to access their home from Richmond Avenue. One must question why such a condensed development is necessary regardless of where it is located in the city. It’s also unfortunate that some residents of Rainbow Bay, immediately adjacent to the property, did not receive the required written notice of the public hearing from Brandon Planning because this department apparently did not know where it was.

Such a waste

The sad thing about the City of Brandon being late with its financial statements is all the additional time required of staff and the auditor will be spent preparing financial statements under the new public sector accounting standards, which make them more useless than in the past. The accounting bodies and the provincial government should be embarrassed by all the additional costs incurred by all the municipalities to implement the new accounting system when there will be no benefit — and in fact, may be less useful to the average citizen of this city.
