No beef with editorial cartoon

The editorial cartoon in the Oct. 16 Brandon Sun, showing Agriculture Minister Ritz being stuffed into a grinder, titled, “Tainted beef scandal?’ was timely, resourceful and appropriate.

Mayor Decter Hirst — tear down that wall!

Wonder if the city’s new derelict building law applies to the junky looking plywood wall that the owners of the Brown Block erected to meet minimum standards after their building toppled last year? The mayor has said in the Sun “a downtown destination hotel would make sense for land occupied by the former Brandon Inn and the recently demolished Brown Block as part of an entertainment complex for the city’s core.” So the city’s plans might be helped as it could end up owning the remnants of the Brown Block, as it has not been kept up and looks like hell.

Hats off to Mecca Productions

Regarding the Mecca production of “Ring of Fire.” The show was excellent! Big praise for Mecca Productions and everybody involved. The show sounded amazing, with great vocal harmonies and great band. Please do more shows like this!

Can’t see past your junk

I live in a residential area and I look out my living room window to see a big yellow school bus parked on the street all day. Another neighbour has a huge boat parked in their front yard. Another had a trailer/camper on the street most of the summer and then it sits in the front driveway all winter. Is it asking too much to be able to look out at nice scenery and nice yards instead of these big ugly things? Isn’t there a bylaw against having these unsightly things out front?

It’s called a TRAVEL trailer

Our neighbours have a 18- or 20-foot aging trailer parked along the side of their house that has been there for years and years. The thing doesn’t look like it could move if it had to, and it’s all faded and dirty and I’d bet it isn’t insured. Isn’t that called a derelict vehicle? Why can’t we have more bylaw officers looking for these types of things? I don’t want to be a bad neighbour and rat these people out. Also, the cops cruise around through this area quite a bit — can’t they share info with the bylaw officer?

Brandon public art?

We had some friends in town for a visit last weekend and we drove down Sixth Street heading to the Shoppers Mall. They couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw that sad piece of ‘art’ of the two mouldy circus stuffed animals mounted six feet in the air on mini-bikes in a yard near the train tracks. I said they’ve been there for some time and are kinda part of the local scenery. Our friends just said they wouldn’t want to live anywhere near that yard, as the property values would take a hit if anyone was trying to sell a house in the area.

Sure would be nice if we could go to a casino

I am just wondering what is happening with the casino. I have a whole bunch of people coming to town to see the Manitoba Heritage Tattoo at the arena on Oct. 27 and it sure would be nice if we could go see the Tattoo, go out for a nice meal and then go out to a casino and do a little gambling. I voted NDP all my life and I just wondered if I was wrong? How can one group get a licence and hold on to it and do nothing for years and years. If they can’t do anything, then let somebody else have it. Get on it, Mayor Shari. I voted for you too — was I wrong?

Who is more deserving?

I recently noted the money paid to the top billing 16 Manitoba doctors in the Brandon Sun of Oct. 13. The first observation that came to mind was that none of these top expert doctors receive as much money as an average NHL player! Since one way or another society pays the salary of both groups, what does it say for our values? Maybe all of our children should aspire to be hockey players if society sees a greater value in hockey than medicine.
