It’s a guarantee: Since the Summer Fair is in town, the rain must fall.
And Environment Canada was correct with its forecast that called for a good chance of rain just about all weekend long.
That made for a pretty soggy couple of parades Saturday morning, which either soldiered through or managed to dodge showers.
In true show-must-go-on spirit, Mayor Shari Decter Hirst granted 240 soldiers from the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based out of CFB Shilo, Freedom of the City. Then the 57th annual Travellers’ Day Parade wound through city streets to the Keystone Centre.
And despite the off-and-on sunshine, organizers of the 130th edition of the Summer Fair — one of the city’s most popular annual attractions — said they were pleased with the overall turnout.
A Provincial Exhibition media release characterized the weather for the five-day event as being “interesting.”
Sagkeeng’s Finest, the recent winners of “Canada’s Got Talent,” performed at the fair on Sunday.
The trio, including brothers Dallas and Brandon Courchene and Vince O’Laney, mix tap, traditional and square dance in their routines.
Other dancers from Sagkeeng First Nation, 145 kms northeast of Winnipeg, also participated in the performance.
The Bronx Wanderers concert brought the Manitoba Summer Fair to a close Sunday night. The midway, fair food, horse show, petting zoo, Chrome in the Trees, Breakfast Under the Domes and Demo Derby continued to be hits with fairgoers, according to organizers. Some new attractions were the Elastic Gymnastics act, a hypnotist, juggler, something called Wobbly Water Balls and a Zipline.
Sadly, there were also incidents where the Brandon city police had to get involved. On Friday, two girls were attacked and robbed by a gang of eight to 10 woman. The suspects assaulted the girls, stole their purses and cellphones and then fled into the crowd in the midway area.
On Saturday, an ATV was stolen from the fairgrounds and in an unrelated incident, an impaired driver was reported trying to enter the Keystone Centre grounds.
“In terms of security, we’ve had fewer incidents than previous years. We increased security on the midway and Brandon city police have been making their presence known,” said Karen Oliver, general manager of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba.
And a police spokesperson confirmed this year’s fair was relatively uneventful in terms of crime compared to previous years.
The next event for the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba is the Manitoba Livestock Expo which will run from Nov. 3-6.
