A clever invitation from Brandon University has put a new spin on celebrating winter.
At their annual Winterlude open house and celebration — scheduled for all day today at the university campus — there will be plenty of normal winter activities. Faculty and staff will face off against students in a hockey match, there will be public skating, a bannock bake-off and hot chocolate for all.
But it was the quirky exhibitions that caught our attention. Along with a Star Trek-like death for gummy candy ursines, the university promises dancing sand and music that they’ll turn into flame.
It’s all part of a strategy to open up the university to the wider community. That is a strategy we wholeheartedly endorse.
“We have been a part of this community for more than 100 years, and during Winterlude, we throw open the doors to say thanks with food and entertainment,” the university’s president, Deborah Poff, said in the invitation.
With a gorgeous day in the forecast, this is a great opportunity not only to see what the university has to offer, but to enjoy a nice winter weekend day.
Get out there and take advantage of it.
