IN PICTURES: Construction of the Prince Edward Hotel

The Prince Edward Hotel at 100

Brandon archives have several photos that show the construction of the Prince Edward Hotel. It took about two years to erect, between 1910–12, opening its doors in June after several delays.

The Canadian Northern railway depot, along Ninth Street, was completed first. The six-storey hotel, facing Princess Avenue, was attached.

Before the Prince Edward Hotel was built, there was this. It's Brandon, 1892, looking southwest from Seventh Street and Princess Avenue. The Salvation Army Citadel (in background, top-right) was then on what would be the site of Prince Edward Hotel. Notice then-new City Hall, with its tower in front and opera house behind. The Beaubier Hotel, then one of the city's finest lodgings, is on the right of the photo, near centre. The home in the foreground is now the site of the new YMCA building. Above is a page from the Henderson Directory from Brandon in 1906. It shows a blacksmith and a repair shop near the site of what would soon become the Prince Edward Hotel. The hotel would later get an address of 908 Princess Ave. (Peel's Prairie Provinces)

An architect's drawing of the proposed Canadian Northern Hotel and Station — later named the Prince Edward Hotel — seen from the northeast. A version of this sketch was published at least twice in the Brandon Daily Sun: June 3, 1910 and again Aug. 14, 1911. (Photo courtesy the SJ McKee Archives / Brandon University)

Looking south along Ninth Street, this 1911 photo shows the Prince Edward Hotel under construction, as well as City Hall and, at extreme left, St. Paul’s Church. (I.C. Barton, photo courtesy the SJ McKee Archives / Brandon University)

Workers pose on wooden scaffolding during the construction of the Prince Edward Hotel in Brandon, in August 1911. The attached train station to the south appears nearly complete. Note "The Brandon Roller Rink" to the west. (This print is from the S.A. Magnacca Research Centre at the Daly House Museum, but identical prints also exist at the SJ McKee Archives and in the Brandon Sun files)
