Former Liverpool 'keeper Grobbelaar joins Ottawa Fury as goalie coach

OTTAWA - Former Liverpool star Bruce Grobbelaar has joined Ottawa Fury FC as the North American Soccer League team's goalkeeper coach.

The South African-born 'keeper spent 13 seasons at Liverpool, winning six league titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and the European Cup in 440 appearances for the storied club.

"Bruce is a fantastic addition to this staff and will help everyone in this club be better," Fury FC head coach Marc Dos Santos said in a statement Thursday. "Our goalkeepers will benefit from this addition. The experience and knowledge that Bruce brings to his role will be of great benefit to Ottawa Fury FC."

The 56-year-old Grobbelaar has ties to Canada, having made 24 appearances in a previous incarnation of the NASL with the Vancouver Whitecaps during the 1979-80 season before playing in England.

Born in Durban, South Africa, Grobbelaar was raised in neighbouring Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) and won 32 caps for his country between 1980 and 1998.

The second-tier NASL has 10 teams, including Ottawa and FC Edmonton.
