Former Tiger-Cats owner appeals for return of Grey Cup ring stolen in break-in

TORONTO - A former owner of the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats is asking for the return of his "priceless" 1999 Grey Cup ring, which was stolen from his Toronto home during a break-in.

George Grant, who was owner and vice-chairman of the Tiger-Cats from 1992 to 2003, says the championship ring was taken Feb. 9 along with other jewelry and valuables.

Grant says he and his wife returned from a family dinner that evening to find the front door forced open and many valuable items, including sterling silver, watches and all his jewelry, had been taken.

He says the Grey Cup ring was in a special wooden box and that a Diamond Jubilee Medal was also taken.

Grant says he's not offering a reward but is hoping whoever took the ring will return it as a matter of conscience.

A founder of the Ottawa Senators NHL hockey team, Grant has been in the broadcasting business for 50 years, serving in many senior posts, including as director of ZoomerMedia Ltd.

He says he doesn't think the thief or thieves knew he had a Grey Cup ring when they broke in.

"I think it was just ... grab whatever looked valuable and was easy to carry."

But he calls the theft of the ring in particular "very disheartening."

"It's quite devastating because it's such a special part of my life and it represents a very special period in my life."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Toronto police or Crime Stoppers.
