French star forward Thierry Henry says his faves are Mueller, Ribery

PORTLAND, Ore. - Forget Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

French star forward Thierry Henry says kids should model themselves on German forward Thomas Mueller and French winger Franck Ribery.

"It's funny how people sometimes don't look at the game the way you should look at the game," the New York Red Bulls star told reporters. "People, especially the media now, they love a guy that does stepovers, tricks and stuff like that. That's not the game.

"The game is what Thomas Mueller is doing for me. That's the game. If I had a son right now playing, I would say to him 'Look at Ribery, look at Mueller. Because what Ronaldo does and Messi, they're just freaks. So don't try to copy those guys, because they're just freaks. That doesn't happen often.'

"But you can copy Franck Ribery, you can copy Thomas Mueller ... He (Mueller) plays the game the right way. He defends, he attacks, controls the ball when he has to control it. He reverses when he has to reverse it. And when he has to finish, he will finish. Yes he doesn't do stepovers, yes he isn't everywhere but when he has to perform he performs.

"I always liked that player since I first saw him and he never stopped performing."

The 36-year-old Henry was responding to a question Monday from a German reporter for his thoughts on German soccer and his favourite player there. Mueller and Ribery both play for Bayern Munich, who provide the opposition for Henry and his fellow MLS all-stars on Wednesday night.
