A quartet of Westman teams were in high school provincial varsity basketball finals on Saturday, however, none of them were able to claim a title.
At the AA boys’ final in MacGregor, the Carman Cougars thumped the host Mustangs 103-45, but MacGregor’s Ben Friesen and Nathan Martens were named tournament all-stars.
At the AA girls’ final in Boissevain, the defending champion Souris Sabres dropped a 69-60 decision to the Gimli Lakers. The host Broncos dumped the Morris Mavericks 78-68 in the third-place contest.
Souris’s Aly Kowalchuk and Lisa Gohl, along with Boissevain’s Alexa Hammond were named tournament all-stars.
At the A boys’ final in Gladstone, the Sprague-based Ross L. Gray Raiders got by the Treherne Tigers 78-55, while the host William Morton Warriors took bronze with an 84-55 win over the Shevchenko Sabres.
The Prairie Mountain Predators took the consolation final 66-58 over the Gilbert Plains Trojans.
Andrew Early of the Tigers and William Morton’s Justin Ejercito received tournament all-star nods.
At the A girls’ final in Hamiota, the Raiders trumped the Grandview Spartans 65-50. The Elton Sabres won the third-place game 78-39 over the Rosenort RedHawks and the Glenboro Panthers took the consolation final, 79-56 over Gilbert Plains.
Grandview’s Mae Branconnier and Hailee Van Wynsberghe, plus Elton’s Georgia-Rae Maxwell were named tournament all-stars.
