De Leo scores winner, Petan five points as the Winterhawks defeat the Thunderbirds

KENT, Wash. - Chase De Leo scored the shootout winner and Nicolas Petan had a goal and four assists in regulation as the Portland Winterhawks edged the host Seattle Thunderbirds 6-5 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Derrick Pouliot scored once and set up three more for the Winterhawks (56-12-3), who have won five games in a row and hold the first seed in the Western Conference.

Paul Bittner and Brendan Leipsic each had a goal and an assist while Seth Jones scored once to round out Portland's offence.

Petan and Leipsic finish the regular season tied atop the WHL scoring lead with 120 points each, however Leipsic scored 49 goals compare to Petan's 46.

Roberts Lipsbergs scored four times for the Thunderbirds (24-38-10), who despite the loss move into seventh in the Western Conference and avoid a first-round matchup with the top seeded Winterhawks.

Andrew Johnson also scored for Seattle and Luke Lockhart had three assists.

Brendan Burke made 35 saves for the win as Danny Mumaugh stopped 21-of-22 shots in 33 minutes of action for the loss. Mumaugh replaced starter Brandon Glover, who allowed four goals on 21 shots before getting pulled.

Portland went 2 for 3 on the power play while Seattle scored once on five chances with the man advantage.
