The Brandon Midget AAA Wheat Kings hit Sweet 16 on Wednesday night.

The Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League-leading Wheat Kings blanked the Parkland Rangers 7-0 at the Sportsplex to run their winning streak to 16 games.

"We’re pretty proud of our guys," Wheat Kings head coach Ken Schneider said. "They’ve played extremely well. Of course there’s always bumps and bruises along the way, and you’re not great every period or every shift, but to be honest, to do that and play some pretty tough teams last weekend, I’m pretty proud of our players."

Tanner Kaspick and Matthew Gerdis both scored twice for the Wheat Kings

(25-2-0), while Kaspick added an assist. Duncan Campbell had a goal and two assists, Josh Kobelka scored one goal and added a helper, while Ty Lewis also scored for Brandon. James Shearer dished out three assists, with Carter McMurdo, Reid Hunter and Jordy Stallard picking up two assists apiece.

Tyler Gutenberg stopped 18 shots for the shutout, while Connor Shaw and Brett Evans combined to make 34 saves for the Rangers (8-16-3), who had their own winning streak snapped at three games.

The Wheat Kings will be back on the ice Friday, hosting the Yellowhead Chiefs.
