Bobcats ready for CIS semifinal

QUEBEC CITY — The Brandon Bobcats will have two opponents in today’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s volleyball semifinal at Laval University.

Not only will the top-ranked Bobcats have to battle the host Laval Rouge et Or, but they’ll have to deal with the boisterous crowd that is expected to reach around 3,000 people.

That crowd helped propel the Quebec conference champion Rouge et Or over the Canada West regular season champion Alberta Golden Bears in their quarter-final last night, and BU head coach Grant Wilson doesn’t want a repeat performance when the two teams go head to head at 7 p.m. (WCG-TV and cis-sic.tv).

"We've talked about it and at the end of the day, it doesn't have anything to do with the crowd," Wilson said. "It comes down to what happens on the court and we can control that so that's what we're going to attempt to do."

It will be an interesting matchup as Laval and Brandon have not played each other this season and only saw each other play last night.

Wilson anticipates a tough match as they spread the ball well and play with a lot of emotion. However, he believes if Brandon can jump out to an early lead and control the match, then the Bobcats will have a chance to reach tomorrow’s final against either the Western Mustangs or the McMaster Marauders.

"I think if we control the ball, control the game, then we control the crowd," he said. "Really that's what we're going to attempt to do. We're going to try to serve tough and get them out of system and try to score early and not allow them to get on runs of three or four points where they can build off the emotion of each other and the crowd."

CAT SCRAPS: Brandon is the last Canada West team with a chance to win the national title. Laval was the last team not from Canada West to win the CIS men’s volleyball championship. They last won it in 1994 … Trinity Western and Alberta were victorious their consolation semifinals and will play for fifth place tomorrow.
