Bobcats win bronze at nationals

QUEBEC CITY — The Brandon University Bobcats are returning home from Quebec City with Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s volleyball bronze medals around their necks.

Brandon battled back from a two-set deficit to beat the Western Mustangs 3-2 (21-25, 34-36, 25-23, 25-18, 15-12) in Sunday’s bronze-medal match at Laval University. Dan Boutwell powered the Bobcat attack with 17 kills and nine blocks. Sam Tuivai also had 17 kills for Brandon, while Roy Ching led the squad with 18.

Garrett Popplestone, who ended the match with a setter dump, had 50 assists, 15 digs and five blocks.

Garrett May was dominant at left side for Western with 24 kills. Justin Scapinello added 19 while Luke Sim had 16. Sean McKay had 69 assists for Western.

This is the third medal for Brandon in three trips to the national men’s volleyball championship. They won silver two years ago and bronze four years ago.

With the win, the Bobcats also secured a second berth for a Canada West school at next year’s national championship in Calgary.
