ACC basketball teams pull plug on season

Wednesday was a rough day for Assiniboine Community College’s athletics department.

Both the Cougars men’s and women’s basketball teams pulled out of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season because neither squad was able to field the required number of players.

“Not having the students to put teams on the court this year is disappointing,” ACC athletic director and MCAC president Larry Shannon said in a release. “Although we won’t be in competition this year, we look forward to future successful seasons for our men’s and women’s basketball teams.”

Both basketball teams also dropped out of conference play midway through last season. This season’s slate of games had yet to begin.

There was more bad news for the ACC men’s and women’s volleyball clubs as their home openers against Providence University College, slated for Saturday, have been postponed because Providence will be unable to bring a team to Brandon this weekend. No makeup date has been set.

Earlier this week, ACC announced the addition of a soccer program which will begin play in the 2013 season.
