None of the three Brandon Barbarians rugby teams enjoyed much success on Minnedosa’s rugby pitch as part of the community’s Fun Fest celebration on Saturday.
All three teams fell to the visiting Winnipeg Assassins in Rugby Manitoba action, much to the chagrin of Jon Fitzpatrick, the head coach of the Barbarians’ Division 1 and 2 men’s teams.
"It’s terribly disappointing," he said.
"We came out of a doubleheader weekend last weekend, which the guys had a lot of fun with. I think mentally and physically we hadn’t fully recovered yet. A weekend takes a lot out of an amateur athlete where we don’t have the best nutrition and rest and life gets in the way. I think that had to do with the weekend as well."
The Division 1 Barbarians (4-3) came out of the gate flat in their 39-19 defeat. They fell behind 30-0 at halftime but bounced back with two tries from Nathan Peto, one try from Max Grouette and two conversions from Michael Birch before the game ended.
Fitzpatrick was happy with the team’s effort in the second half, but knows the first half cost them the game.
"In the second half, we set a challenge for ourselves, we came out and played a good second half but we were just too far in the hole to come back from it," Fitzpatrick said.
The Division 1 team also dressed a number of Division 2 players due to injuries and personal commitments.
That left the Division 2 team with role players stepping up into starting positions in the Barbarians’ 40-7 loss. Dana Burgess scored the lone try for Brandon (2-3-1), while Birch kicked a convert.
Meanwhile, Steph Dornn led the Barbarians women’s team with one try and two converts in a 41-14 loss to the Assassins.
Amanda Williams also scored a try for Brandon (2-4).
Brandon’s two men’s teams return to action this Saturday when the Division 2 team plays host to the Winnipeg Thistles at John Reilly Field at 1 p.m. The Division 1 squad will follow against the University of Manitoba Wombats at 3 p.m.
The Barbarians women’s team is off until July 28.
