Back-to-back wins put Vikes point out of 1st

Dawson Derkson scored one goal and set up another on Thursday night as the Vincent Massey Vikings knocked off the Hamiota Huskies 3-1 in the Westman High School Hockey League.

Late Wednesday night, it was Vikings 2, Rivers/Elton Rage 1.

In provincial qualifying play on Wednesday, it was Souris/Reston Sabres 3, Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders 2.

At Kinsmen Arena, Josh Hoppe and Austin Dobrescu also found the back of the net for the Vikings (8-3-3), who moved within a point of the Deloraine/Hartney Colts for the league lead. Blake Cramer was the lone member of the Huskies (4-8-2) who beat Massey goaltender Cooper Blaine, who made 25 saves.

Vikings 2 Rage 1

At Rivers, Ricky Nicholson scored a power-play marker in the second period that held up as the winner for Massey, which got its other goal from Clark Whelpton. Brock Paddock scored for the Rage (7-7-0) in the first period.

Sabres 3 Raiders 2

At Killarney, Brett King scored with 40.6 seconds left in overtime as the Souris/Reston Sabres won the opening game of their best-of-three provincial A/AA high school hockey qualifier series. Kelvin Wright and Adam Forsyth also scored for the Sabres, who host Game 2 in Souris on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. Cody Shackel had a goal and an assist for the Raiders, while Garret Bridges supplied the other marker.
