Barbarians dominate first home games of year

All three Brandon Barbarians rugby teams opened the home portion of their seasons with victories on Sunday at John Reilly Field.

The Division 1 men’s team improved to 2-0 in the Manitoba Cup with a 76-0 win over the Winnipeg Wasps. Sean Common had a pair of tries and eight conversions for Brandon, while Sheldon Kowalchuk and Frank Urguhart both touched the ball down three times. Nathan Peto added a pair of tries, while Tyler Jury and Jesse Garden supplied singles.

The women, meanwhile, improved to 2-0 in their Rugby Manitoba season courtesy of a 20-0 forfeit win over the Wasps, who didn’t have enough players.

In exhibition play, the Barbarians’ Division 2 men’s team got a pair of tries from both Braden Demontigny and Liam Hammersley, while Andrew Ritchie kicked seven conversions in their 69-5 win over the Sturgeon Creek Rowdies. Mark Janz, Andrew Halliday, Stu Dyck, Joe Boucher Kovacs, Trent Malcolm, Dennis Pozo and Sean Erickson also had tries for the Division 2 squad in its first contest of the spring.
