Lisa Barclay did it again.
The 20-year-old Brandonite earned her second straight CIS championship MVP award, leading the UBC Thunderbirds to their record-tying sixth consecutive national women’s volleyball title on Saturday in Sherbrooke, Que.
Barclay had a match-high 16 kills on 26 swings as the top-seeded T-Birds swept the No.7 Alberta Golden Bears 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-18) in the final, finishing the match off with a kill down the middle. In her third year at UBC, the All-Canadian led the tournament with 43 kills in three matches.
Barclay is the first player to win back-to-back championship MVPs since Michelle Sawatzky of the University of Manitoba in 1990 and 1991 and only the third ever to accomplish the feat. The T-Birds’ sixth straight women’s volleyball title matches the record shared by the Golden Bears (1995-2000) and the Winnipeg Wesmen (1983-88).
