Barclay starts for Canada at tourney

Canada’s national women’s volleyball team fell out of playoff contention on Sunday at the Pan Am Cup at Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

The Canadian crew fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-18) to the 19th-ranked Puerto Ricans on Sunday and dropped to 1-3 in their pool.

Brandon’s Lisa Barclay, who plays for the UBC Thunderbirds during the university season, started her fourth straight match and had five kills and one block for the Canadians, who earned their first win of the tournament on Saturday when they beat Colombia 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13). Barclay started all three sets and had four kills and one ace in that match.

The Canadians, ranked 22nd in the world, wrap up the preliminary portion of the tournament today against the 10th-ranked Cubans.

The consolation round matches start on Wednesday.
