Brandon’s Lisa Barclay plays for UBC and the national team.
Brandon’s Lisa Barclay and Glenboro native Josh Wytinck are finalists for the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s athletes of the year awards.
Barclay, a Crocus Plains graduate and UBC Thunderbirds and Team Canada women’s volleyball standout, is one of five finalists for female athlete of the year after being named MVP while leading UBC to a record-tying sixth straight CIS women’s volleyball title last season. The other finalists are Taylor Pischke, who won bronze at the U23 beach volleyball world championship, swimmer Breanne Siwicki, who won six medals at the Canada Summer Games, women’s softball provincial player of the year Hailey Unger, and Olympic-bound biathlete Megan Imrie.
Wytinck, who was co-winner of Manitoba’s amateur golfer of the year award, is one of five male athlete of the year finalists. He is joined by Jonathan Toews, who led the Chicago Blackhawks to their second Stanley Cup in four years, WHL co-scoring leader Brendan Leipsic of the Portland Winterhawks, CIS all-Canadian running back Anthony Coombs of the Manitoba Bisons, and 10-0 pro boxer Andrew Gardiner.
Jennifer Jones’ Olympic bound women’s curling team — with former Brandon resident Jill Officer — headlines five finalists for team of the year. Also nominated are the U of M Bisons football team that reached the Canada West final, Matt Dunstone’s national champion junior men’s curling team that went on to finish third at the worlds, the MJHL champion Steinbach Pistons, and Manitoba’s gold-medal winning Canada Summer Games canoe-kayak team of Hannah Guttormson and Stephanie Lowry.
Brandon-born broadcaster Daren Millard of Sportsnet will also be named to the MSSA Media Roll of Honour at the 58th annual athletes of the year awards banquet on Jan. 26 in Winnipeg.
