Big efforts from Small, Gundrum rewarded

Paige Small of Treherne and Jessica Gundrum of Swan Lake were both named recipients of Credit Unions High School Scholar Athlete Awards on Thursday.

Small and Gundrum were among four recipients chosen from 26 nominees for the $1,000 scholarships, which are open to Manitoba high school students who maintained an 85 per cent average while competing in at least two sports.

Small, who has a 98 per cent academic average, was the Treherne Tigers’ team captain in volleyball and basketball and also competed in fastball, track and field, badminton and cross-country running. She was an all-star and won the players’ choice award at basketball provincials and was a zone all-star in volleyball.

Gundrum, who has a 95 per cent average, won silver medals in triple jump and hurdles as well as bronze medals in long jump and the medley relay representing Prairie Mountain High School at the provincial track and field championships. She was a zone all-star in volleyball and basketball, played on the zone champion curling team and also won the singles consolation title at badminton provincials. She rounded out a busy slate of sports by competing in fastball and cross-country running.
