Brandon University will be raising its national championship banners this weekend in the new Healthy Living Centre as part of its Blue and Gold Celebration Weekend ceremonies.
It will be the first weekend of full seating in BU’s new $25-million facility as the Bobcats basketball teams face the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday (women’s game at 6 p.m., men at 8 p.m.) and UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday (women at 5 p.m., men at 7 p.m.).
“It’s been a bit of a wait to get to this point, but we’re certainly looking forward to showing off the whole building and the upstairs to all spectators,” BU athletic director Russ Paddock said. “We’re trying to make it exciting and attach some events to this opening and get the students out on Friday night. We think it’s going to be a pretty good atmosphere that we’re going to create for them, and then Saturday try to incorporate the community and recognize some of the basketball history as well.”
Friday’s activities will include an indoor tailgate party in the afternoon prior to tip-off, with a student skills competition with prizes including an iPad and possibly a free semester of tuition for one lucky student, as well as a post-game social at SUDS.
Saturday will feature free afternoon tours of the new multisport facility — which officially opens to the public on Monday for use of the walking track and fitness equipment — as well as a kids’ carnival prior to tip-off. Fans wearing blue and gold will also receive free admission to Saturday’s Bobcat games. The Bobcats’ four national championship basketball banners will be raised prior to Saturday’s men’s game, slated for 7 p.m.
