Brandon’s Amy Lee is wearing a ‘C’ this season.

The 21-year-old fourth-year centre has been named captain of the University of Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team, which is preparing to open the Canada West conference season. Fifth-year left-winger Nellie Minshull of Pierson has been named an alternate captain.

Lee, a Vincent Massey High School graduate and a member of the Westman Wildcats’ 2009 national midget girls championship team, relishes her new role with the Bisons.

"It’s a huge honour," said Lee via telephone from Winnipeg last night. "I really respect my whole team and my coaching staff, so it’s really nice and I guess honour is the best word I can come up, just to be part of the leadership group in general and to get the opportunity to help lead the team this year …

"I think I have always tried to be a good leader and on our team this year and in the past we have always had a lot of good leaders, so that makes it easier, but I take the role very seriously."

Lee and Minshull, who served as alternate captains last season, both scored goals last weekend to help the Bisons sweep all three of their games to win the six-team Mandi Schwartz Challenge pre-season tournament in Regina. The Bisons posted a fifth-place 12-8-4 record in Canada West last season, but missed the playoffs for the first time in eight years. Lee is determined to get the Bisons back into post-season play.

"We definitely want to get in the playoffs," said Lee, who had two goals and eight points in 24 games last season, while Minshull finished second in team scoring with 11 goals and 21 points. "We have an extra team in the league this year and we definitely want to get a spot in the playoffs and I would really like to see us get to the final in our league and I think we have the team to do it."

The Bisons will open the regular season at home on Oct. 5-6 against the Alberta Pandas at the Max Bell Arena in Winnipeg.
